I am completely charmed by the natural beauty and style of this Inupik mom. A century ago she stares into the camera with a poise and pride that seems impossibly elegant and timeless. I visited the Michelangelo exhibition in the Renaissance rooms at the National Gallery last week and was reminded of how important the Madonna and child motif was to the 15th and 16th century European mind. The world seems more complete to me when I think that explorers from Western civilization were about to come face to face with the extreme geography and beauty of the arctic people. She was about to dazzle them.
